What the data shows

Four consistent patterns appear in this dataset: difficulty sustaining focus is widespread, many people report being busy without meaningful progress, these two experiences often occur together, and only a minority report being able to sustain attention beyond 30 minutes.

Participants could select more than one source. Commonly reported sources of distraction include:

  • 38% selected colleagues / family / friends.
  • 35% selected background noise / environment.
  • 32% selected internal thoughts / worries (and 32% selected social media scrolling).

Patterns observed in the data

Attention frustration and “busy without progress” frequently co-occur

A large share of respondents report both sustained focus difficulty and feeling busy without meaningful progress. This suggests that ongoing activity can occur alongside reduced ability to remain with a task long enough to produce a clear outcome.

Attention breakdown is experienced as emotionally negative

The most common one-word response after losing focus is “frustrated”, indicating that difficulty sustaining attention is often experienced as emotionally negative rather than neutral.

Methodology

This dataset forms part of the Human Clarity Institute’s Human–AI Experience research programme, examining how attention, distraction, and cognitive strain are experienced in digitally mediated environments. The study uses a cross-sectional online survey design and focuses on descriptive patterns in how people experience focus stability, interruption, fatigue, and behavioural alignment.

Data were collected on 3 September 2025 via the Prolific research platform from adults across English-speaking countries. Participants provided explicit informed consent for anonymised data publication as part of HCI’s open research programme.

Sampling & participants

  • Clean dataset: 790 valid responses
  • Countries: United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland
  • Eligibility: Adults (18+) fluent in English
  • Recruitment platform: Prolific

Participants were recruited using platform screening filters. The resulting dataset should be interpreted as a non-probability convenience sample and is not intended to represent national populations.

Data integrity

All percentages reported on this page are calculated from valid responses in the cleaned dataset (n = 790) and rounded to the nearest whole number for readability. Denominators vary by item because each figure is based on respondents who provided a valid answer to the specific question shown.

Unless otherwise stated, the main summary figures on this page combine respondents selecting sometimes / often / almost always on the relevant frequency-based response scale. The values-alignment concentration figure uses a different grouping: respondents who reported being somewhat more focused or much more focused/energised when tasks reflect what matters to them.

Other figures on this page use item-specific definitions that are stated in the wording. These include a single selected category (such as typical focus duration above 30 minutes), a single highest-response category (such as very strong day-to-day values alignment), multi-select response shares for distraction sources, a normalised open-response word share for the most common feeling after losing focus, and a co-occurrence measure for respondents meeting the stated threshold on both focus frustration and busy-without-progress items.

Where multiple response options are possible, percentages represent the share of participants selecting each option, so totals may exceed 100%. Minor differences between totals may occur due to rounding.

This dataset is exploratory and descriptive in nature. It does not support causal inference and results should be interpreted as observed patterns within the survey sample.

This dataset is released as open research to support transparent analysis of attention, distraction, and behavioural alignment in digitally mediated life.
