What is normal AI use?

There is no single normal level of AI use. Current behaviour ranges from occasional questions to daily integration across work and personal life. In a February 2026 U.S. survey, 49% of adults said they used AI chatbots and 24% used them daily. But frequency alone cannot show whether AI is acting as a convenience, a thinking partner, a decision aid or something a person feels unable to work without.

Direct answer

Normal AI use is best understood through three measures: how often someone uses AI, what they use it for and what role it plays in their thinking and decisions. “Normal” on this page means observed or common within a defined comparison group. It does not mean recommended, beneficial or risk-free.

Four key findings

There is no universal threshold for normal or heavy AI use. Definitions change depending on whether researchers measure frequency, time, prompts, tasks or behavioural reliance.
Daily chatbot use is common, but it is not the majority pattern among all U.S. adults. Pew Research Center found that 24% used AI chatbots daily and 16% used them several times a day or more.
Consumer AI use extends well beyond work. OpenAI found that 70% of consumer ChatGPT activity was non-work use and 30% was work-related.
Frequency and behavioural reliance are not the same measure. HCI data shows that reliance, verification, decision ownership and perceived control can coexist and must be assessed separately.

What this benchmark measures

This benchmark separates three questions that are often collapsed into one. How frequently does a person use AI? What activities do they use it for? And how much authority or cognitive work do they give it? These questions are related, but they do not measure the same thing.

Frequency

Occasional, weekly, daily or several-times-daily interaction. Frequency describes exposure and routine.

Purpose

Information, writing, work, learning, planning, decisions, entertainment, support or companionship.

Behavioural role

Whether AI supplies ideas, checks thinking, reduces effort, influences decisions or becomes difficult to work without.

Two people can both use AI every day and still have very different relationships with it. One may use it for brief administrative tasks; another may rely on it for reassurance, judgement or most difficult decisions. Frequency places them in the same usage band, but it does not make their behaviour equivalent.

Pew Research Center found that 49% of U.S. adults said they used AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot. Daily use was reported by 24%, including 16% who used chatbots several times a day or almost constantly.

These figures show that deliberate chatbot use is established but uneven. Daily use is no longer unusual, while non-use remains common across the adult population.

How do people use AI?

The most common uses are practical and varied. Pew found that 42% of U.S. adults used chatbots to search for information, while 38% of employed adults used them for work tasks. Smaller shares used chatbots for emotional support or advice and companionship.

OpenAI’s analysis of 1,500,000 consumer ChatGPT conversations found that practical guidance, information seeking and writing accounted for three-quarters of conversations. It also found that 70% of consumer activity was non-work use and 30% was work-related.

What the HCI benchmark adds

Adoption studies show how many people use AI and what they use it for. HCI measures the behavioural role AI plays once it enters thinking and decision-making. This is the part frequency alone cannot answer.

Frequent decision support can coexist with verification and responsibility

In HCI’s Decision-Making & Digital Systems dataset, 46% reported frequently using digital or AI systems to help make decisions. Reliance was more situational: 58% said they relied more on these systems when decisions felt mentally difficult.

At the same time, 85% said they double-checked or questioned system outputs before acting, and 91% still felt personally responsible for the final decision. These are separate behavioural signals. Using AI often, relying on it under difficulty and retaining oversight can all be present within the same decision environment.

Feeling in control can coexist with feeling influenced

HCI’s Autonomy, Control & Perceived Independence dataset shows another reason not to infer behaviour from frequency alone. In this sample, 74% felt in control when using AI and 88% said they could override AI recommendations. Yet 59% also felt nudged or steered by systems.

Perceived agency and perceived influence are therefore not opposites. A person may feel able to reject an AI recommendation while still recognising that AI affected which options they considered or how they evaluated them.

HCI benchmark conclusion: usage frequency is a useful comparison variable, but it is not a behavioural verdict. To understand a person’s relationship with AI, frequency must be considered alongside reliance, verification, decision ownership and agency. What “normal” should mean

Normal is descriptive, not evaluative

A behaviour can be common without being beneficial in every context. It can also be uncommon without being problematic. This benchmark uses “normal” to describe observed patterns and relevant comparison groups—not to approve, diagnose or judge an individual’s AI use.

Frequency answers only the first question

Daily use tells us that AI is part of someone’s routine. It does not tell us whether that person uses AI for email drafting, technical work, personal reflection, reassurance or difficult decisions. Nor does it reveal whether the person checks outputs, disagrees with recommendations or feels capable without the tool.

“Heavy use” needs a stated definition

There is no universal scientific cutoff for heavy AI use. A study might define it through daily frequency, hours, prompt volume, paid-plan activity or integration across tasks. HCI therefore uses explicit frequency bands for comparison and measures behavioural reliance separately.

The most useful comparison combines peers and behaviour

Comparing yourself with people who use AI at a similar frequency provides useful context. The comparison becomes more meaningful when it also shows how your reliance, verification, decision delegation and agency compare within that group.

Does frequent AI use mean someone is dependent on AI?

No. Frequency measures how often a person uses AI, while dependence concerns the role AI plays and what happens when it is unavailable. Reliance, verification, decision ownership and perceived agency must be measured separately.

Is my AI use normal?

Frequency can show whether your use is common within a comparison group, but it cannot provide the full answer. A more meaningful comparison also examines what you use AI for, whether you verify it, how much you rely on it and whether you retain ownership of decisions.
